West Ham would consider Rio return

Posted on 1:41 AM by Unknown
Manchester United
West Ham are seriously interested in bringing Rio Ferdinand back to Upton Park, but the clubs former centre half may prove far too expensive, according to ESPN's West Ham sources. PA Photos Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand on bench..

Due to the defender's age, United will offer only a one-year new contract, most likely his last at Old Trafford. But Ferdinand might opt to take it, before considering offers in the States, Russia and China, but his spiritual home back in east London might also have its appeal. However a West Ham source told ESPN on Friday:

"He might be too expensive, but who knows?" It is believed Ferdinand may want to finish his career where it all began and West Ham manager Allardyce said the club could make a play for the defender if he becomes available next summer.

"I think it's highly unlikely that we would consider Rio Ferdinand at the moment," Allardyce said. "But if it's at the end of the season and he hasn't got a new contract and he is going to leave Manchester United then we would be interested if we can sustain our Premier League status. It depends entirely on Rio. "The chairman likes to think big and it's nice to have a chairman who thinks big. Everything has to be in place. If Rio wants to come back, the financial package and so on and so forth and whether they want to release him or not.

"If he wants to live back in London eventually, which is where he comes from, which is what quite a few players like to do before the end of their careers then that might be an advantage for us." The Hammers' top earner is Andy Carroll, who earns £80,000 a week after the club made an exception for him to match his wages at Anfield. Ferdinand's current wage at Old Trafford is £135,000 a week. He will want to keep that level of salary, but West Ham cannot possibly accomodate such high earners, so the only possibility is if Rio took a pay cut.

Redknapp dismisses Blackburn rumours

Posted on 1:41 AM by Unknown
Harry Redknapp has told ESPN that he is not taking the Blackburn Rovers job despite being linked with the vacant position..

A number of names have been mentioned as candidates for the post, including Tim Sherwood and Les Ferdinand from Tottenham, and also former player and manager Glenn Hoddle.

However, both Hoddle and Sherwood turned down the opportunity, with Spurs refusing Blackburn permission to speak with Sherwood, and their coach opting not to walk out to return to Ewood Park.

This week, Blackburn have also been linked with another former Spurs manager Redknapp, but he told ESPN there is "no chance" of him being persuaded by the club's global advisor Shebby Singh to take up the post. Redknapp, who has also been linked with Southampton and QPR in recent weeks, has been without a job since leaving Tottenham in the summer, and has recently taken up an advisory role at Bournemouth.

The current bookmakers' favourite for the Blackburn job is former Scotland international Billy McKinlay, who has occupied a coaching role at Fulham after joining the club in 2004

Video: Wenger wary of 'Rooney' rule

Press Pass Extra: Wenger critical of the 'Rooney' rule
Shaka Hislop, the honorary president of Show Racism the Red Card, gives his reaction to Arsene Wenger's criticism of the Rooney Rule.Tags: Racism, Rooney Rule, Arsene Wenger
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has rejected suggestions that English football would benefit from the introduction of an initiative comparable to the American-style 'Rooney Rule', which forces NFL teams to consider black candidates for every vacant coaching position..

Wenger dismissed claims that a breakaway black players union would help to calm racial tensions bubbling in English football earlier in the week, and he has now hit out at the suggestion that more black coaches should be welcomed into the Premier League in a structure that he suggests would be tantamount to a "quota" system.
"I have always been against discrimination, positive or negative," said Wenger. "Just to put a quota out, for me is exactly against what sport has to be. Sport is about competition and competence and you should be judged on whether you can do the job well.
"This rule would be a kind of racism and what we have all to fight for is competence, to put people who are good at their job. Whether they are white, black, red, no matter what colour, put guys who have a competence. That is worth fighting for.
"You measure people in sport by how well they play, not on the colour of their skin. You never leave any player out for a racial reason. You only field your best team and just look at the quality of the players."
Wenger moved on from his speech at the club's fractious AGM on Thursday morning to a press briefing with journalists who were quick to put more pressure on the Arsenal boss after defeats against Norwich last Saturday and Schalke in the Champions League on Wednesday night left him reeling.
While the Frenchman is convinced his side can bounce back with a Premier League victory against QPR on Saturday, he has hinted that he may be tempted to risk an early elimination from the Capital One Cup next Tuesday against Reading in bid to focus on his bigger goals.
After listing the League Cup as his fifth most important target for this season at the AGM on Thursday, Wenger looks prepared to sacrifice what many see as his best hope of silverware this season in a bid to revive his Premier League and European ambitions.
"Ask any club, do you want to win the League Cup or be in the Champions League next season and they will all give you the same answer," said. "Of course we want both, but sometimes we are in positions where you cannot do both, when you have a short squad, you have to make a choice.
"We play Saturday against QPR, then Tuesday at Reading, then Man United on Saturday before going to Schalke. At some stage you have to make a choice and sometimes you have to put priorities in."
Wenger is refusing to look for the panic button ahead of his side's clash with Mark Hughes's struggling side this weekend, as he insists only "small fractions" of improvement are required for his side to return to winning ways.
"It is important for us to bounce back and have a good result in the Premier League," he concluded. "We are still in a strong position in the Champions League and I feel it is only small fractions that need to improve.
"The performance against Schalke was a bit flat and of course that is frustrating. For us not to create many chances is surprising and the regret is that we would not find a way to make a 0-0 draw. That would have been a good result considering our performance."

Hiddink cools talk of Rooney move

Posted on 1:33 AM by Unknown
Wayne Rooney
Anzhi Makhachkala boss Guus Hiddink has played down the possibility of a move for Manchester United
striker Wayne Rooney..

Rooney, 27, almost left United in 2010 before deciding to stay and sign a five-year contract, but struggled for form and fitness in the early stages of this season, suggesting he could be tempted away. Anzhi team director Roberto Carlos told Sky Sports on Thursday that the England forward could be on their shopping list. But Hiddink, speaking after Thursday night's 1-0 Europa League defeat against Liverpool at Anfield, said such a move was unrealistic.

"He is vice-president, Roberto, and he can express his ideas, and he does that well," Hiddink said. "He hasn't said it to me so far, but it's nice sometimes to talk out of the blue without any reality." Anzhi have spent significantly on transfer fees and wages to bring striker Samuel Eto'o, former Chelsea winger Yuri Zhirkov and ex-Blackburn defender Chris Samba to the club, but Hiddink is also keen to bring through young local talent.

"We want star players," he said. "But before the game [against Liverpool], I explained that the club are not making investment for investment's sake. It must be good. "Of course, Rooney is very good. But it must be realistically achievable as well.

As you have seen tonight, I was happy with the performance of some young Russian players, even though we lost. "We are not looking just for big names. We want a good balance. I don't think the club will do anything foolish. But let's not undervalue Wayne Rooney, of course. I respect him very much."

Zimbabwe FA ban 15 for match-fixing

Posted on 11:58 PM by Unknown
Former ZIFA chief executive Henrietta Rushwaya
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has banned 15 players and officials for life following their involvement in the country's long-running match-fixing scandal..

The banned individuals were accused of accepting money from a betting syndicate to throw matches between 2007 and 2009. During that time Zimbabwe lost to Jordan 2-0, Thailand 3-0 and Syria 6-0 during tours in Malaysia arranged by Rushwaya.

"Today will go down as a sad, depressing day in the annals of history of the game in Zimbabwe," Justice Ahmed Ebrahim - a former Supreme Court judge who was chairman of the independent panel investigating the case - said. FIFA has indicated that the bans will take worldwide effect while current ZIFA President Cuthbert Dube insisted no stone would be left unturned in cleaning up the game.

"We will not step down until we clean up football," Cuthbert said. Despite ZIFA stating that the bans would take effect immediately, Thomas Sweswe - one of those sanctioned - turned out for his South African club Bidvest Wits on Friday, while Chidzambwa was directing operations from the bench during his side Black Leopard's 2-0 loss to Orlando Pirates on Saturday.

FIFA has released a statement reading: "FIFA will be in contact with the ZIFA in order to be informed of the exact status of the disciplinary proceedings, receive the decisions and take the appropriate measures as soon as possible."

Zidane denies rift with Mourinho

Posted on 11:57 PM by Unknown
Real Madrid sporting director Zinedine Zidane has denied rumours that he fails to see eye to eye with club boss Jose Mourinho. Reports in Marca last month suggested that Zidane was unhappy at being sidelined by Mourinho, however, he has rubbished such stories.
Zinedine Zidane
"I have no problem with Mourinho," Zidane told Sport365. "On the contrary, I have learned a lot from him." The ex-France international has also stated his reasoning for not being around the club's Valdebebas training facility each day currently as he is preparing to become a qualified coach..

"At Real I learned what a great club it is from the inside," he said. "My passion is to be on the field day to day so I have decided to return to France to study.

I am studying so that I become a great coach. I believe the way to be a great coach these days is to be a great manager of the dressing-room.

That is fundamental." Zidane, memorably sent off in his last international appearance for headbutting Italy's Marco Materazzi in the 2006 World Cup final, says his ambition is to eventually manage the French senior team some day. "I want to become the French national boss," he said. "That is the dream of every citizen of this country, but that is a long way off yet.

Smalling and Jones near return

Posted on 11:55 PM by Unknown
Phil Jones and Chris Smalling Man Utd
Manchester United's Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are two or three weeks away from a first-team return, according to Sir Alex Ferguson..

The two England international defenders are yet to play this season during Manchester United's defensive injury crisis, which has also seen Nemanja Vidic missing.

Smalling suffered a broken metatarsal while Jones had surgery on a knee problem but Ferguson said the former Fulham player is back in training and the £16 million signing from Blackburn will soon join him. "Chris trained [Monday] morning with [reserve-team coach] Warren Joyce," Ferguson explained.

"He has trained there a couple of days now but it is non-contact at the moment. The encouraging thing is he is definitely on the way back. I expect Phil Jones to start next Monday on the football side and the two of them are two or three weeks away."

Winger Ashley Young will make his first appearance since August in Tuesday's Champions League meeting with Braga at Old Trafford as Ferguson admitted he faces a selection dilemma in midfield and attack. "We have Ashley Young back and he will be involved," the Scot said. "I have plenty of wide players and plenty of central midfielders.

I have an issue in terms of picking the team and even the substitutes." Ferguson suggested that Tom Cleverley and Shinji Kagawa, who were not involved in Saturday's 4-2 win over Stoke, will both start as he denied that, despite resting Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra, he is complacent about the clash with the Portuguese team.

"We've kept players back who have been playing well like Tom Cleverley and Shinji Kagawa to play in Tuesday's game so I wouldn't call that underestimating Braga," he added. "To my mind, Braga are better away from home and they showed that beating Galatasaray." Ferguson also said he will not sign Porto's James Rodriguez, saying: "I hope not because it costs a fortune getting a player from Portugal."

Terry to wear anti-racism armband

Posted on 11:55 PM by Unknown
John Terry Kick it Out T-shirt
Chelsea captain John Terry will sport an anti-racism armband when he returns to action in the Champions League against Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday night. UEFA are instructing club captains to wear 'United Against Racism' logos on their kit as part of a week of action by European anti-discrimination body FARE, yet the timing could not be more sensitive for Terry, who he is currently serving a four-game domestic ban in England after being found guilty of racially abusing QPR's Anton Ferdinand..

The racism initiative is a bold move from UEFA at a moment when they are coming under increased pressure to punish the Serbian FA after England's Under-21 players were alleged to have suffered racially motivated abuse during a Euro 2013 play-off tie last week.

Anti-racism groups have called on Terry to take a leading role in the fight against an issue that football is struggling to beat across the continent, and the Blues skipper may be able to start by wearing the armband at Shakhtar's Donbass Arena. Meanwhile, Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo has moved to play down the rising expectations surrounding his Premier League table-toppers and insisted this is still a season of transition for the reigning European champions despite their stunning start to the season.

"There are still 30 games to play in the Premier League and so many more in the other cup competitions, so it is too early to start talking about title challenges or winning big trophies," he saud. "We will be tested this season and then we have to see how we react. "I am just happy to be leading this group and working with these players and working for the club that I have in my heart.

The players deserve all the credit for our start, as it has been extremely difficult last season and also this season with integrating players and our system of play. "I am just here to help and do my job well as I can and hopefully this story can continue for a long time."

Moratti: Inter not aiming for Serie A title

Posted on 11:46 PM by Unknown
Massimo Moratti has dismissed suggestions that Inter could challenge for the Serie A title.
Massimo Moratti
Andrea Stramaccioni's side have begun the campaign in impressive fashion, with Sunday's 2-0 victory over Catania leaving the Nerazzurri in fourth spot on 18 points - just four adrift of the Juventus..

"I like this spirit, our aim is not to win Serie A, but making the best of the season we possibly can,” he told reporters.

"I am happy because we are playing well. I think that Stramaccioni is a good head coach and he is doing a fine job." Injured midfielder Wesley Sneijder has been forced to watch on from the sidelines as his side have hit a fine run of form, but Moratti believes he will walk straight back into the team upon his return.

"In this team there is space for a champion like him. I am sure that he will find his position in Stramaccioni's squad," he added.

Ribery relishing return to Lille for upcoming Champions League clash

Posted on 11:45 PM by Unknown
Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery has expressed his motivation leading into his side's upcoming Champions League match against Lille, while also reflecting on the 3-1 loss against BATE Borisov.
FC Bayern Munich, Franck Ribery
The 29-year-old Roten star has been in excellent form so far this season, playing a big part in helping his club to a record-breaking start of eight consecutive Bundesliga wins. And the next fixture sees the Bavarian outfit travelling to northern France – near to where Ribery grew up and played youth football during the late 90s..

"I know my family and a lot of friends will be there," he told reporters at a press conference in Lille ahead of the match. He then went on to say that the Bavarians could have a difficult task at hand in facing les Dogues, although the 29-year-old winger made reference to the French outfit losing a key player in the summer.

"With the departure of Eden Hazard [to Chelsea], the club has lost its best player of the last few years," he explained. "Lille lost their first two matches and they will give everything to beat us in front of their fans, so as to keep their chances of qualifying alive."

The Frenchman then reflected on Bayern's loss to the Belarus champions BATE on matchday 2 of Europe's premier club competition. "We were surprised to lose to BATE Borisov. Because of that we've got a bit of pressure on our shoulders in the Champions League. So we have a clear objective: win the match in France and the return match in Munich. That will put us on the way to qualifying.'

Ferguson: Rafael is maturing into a great player

Posted on 11:42 PM by Unknown
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has showered praise on his Brazilian youngster Rafael da Silva, after a string of strong performances at the start of this Premier League season.
Rafael da Silva, Manchester United
Currently without Phil Jones and Chris Smalling due to injury, and with twin brother Fabio sent out on loan at QPR, Rafael is the only right-sided full-back available to United at present and has staked his claim for a first-team place with a level of consistency which had been lacking in previous seasons. "He is maturing and learning all the time," Ferguson told Sky Sports..

"Rafael has all the ingredients of a great player. He is blessed with great enthusiasm, skill and speed. "He was quite impulsive and tended to over-commit himself. Rafael himself also revealed that his maturity has improved greatly from last season - a time in which he was at fault for sloppy goals conceded against Everton and Athletic Bilbao, as United finished the season without any silverware.

"I do think they look at me differently now," said Rafael. "The way I play for United has changed a little bit and I have scored some goals as well. "But mature is the word. I always want the ball. Now I read the game more and know what the opposing player is going to do."

The 22 year-old also emphasised the importance of playing for his country, and the wave of excitement and expectation that has swept over Brazil. "It is a big time for me. The World Cup is the big competition for Brazil and all the fans expect us to win. I am really looking forward to being there," he added

Manchester United look to slash Ferdinand salary with new deal

Posted on 11:41 PM by Unknown
Manchester United are ready to offer Rio Ferdinand a one-year contract extension in January – but on around half his current salary.
Rio Ferdinand,Wayne Rooney
The defender, who turns 34 next month, has yet to open talks with United about a new deal even though his agreement expires next summer. The club want to extend his spell at Old Trafford beyond 11 years but, in line with their policy of offering reduced terms to its over-30s players, Ferdinand cannot expect a renewal of his current £120,000-a-week wages..

We understands that when the two parties sit down to begin negotiations in the new year, United are preparing to offer Ferdinand a 12-month package worth around £60-70,000-a-week. United’s proposal is unrelated to the Kick It Out controversy involving the 33-year-old and manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Premier League giants have a well-established policy of handing less lucrative deals to players once they enter their mid-30s and their first-team appearances are being more strictly rationed. The likes of Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville have all taken wage cuts towards the tail-end of their careers. Ferdinand and his advisers have yet to test temperature in preliminary talks but are not expecting anything other than a one-year contract offer from United.

They will then have to decide whether to extend the defender’s Old Trafford career, which began in 2002 when he joined from Leeds United, or accept a lengthier offer from elsewhere. MLS clubs New York Red Bulls and Chicago Fire are among those monitoring Ferdinand’s situation while West Ham, where he began his professional career, would also be interested if there are signs he might leave United next summer. Since missing the opening weeks of the season through injury, Ferdinand has started seven of United’s eight Premier League and Champions League matches.

There were reports that the defender’s future at Old Trafford could be under threat after he defied Ferguson by refusing to wearing a shirt in support of football’s anti-racism movement during the warm-up before United’s 4-2 win against Stoke City on Saturday. But the manager is thought to have cleared the air with one of his most senior players during a meeting on Sunday morning at the club’s Carrington base, where Ferdinand arrived with the rest of the team for an hour-long warm-down and massage session. Ferguson is said to have told Ferdinand he was disappointed that the player failed to inform him he intended not to wear the Kick It Out T-shirt.

Ferguson thinks this made him look foolish after he told the media on Friday that all his players would wear the group’s T-shirts. It is believed that Ferdinand apologised to his manager for not disclosing that information, and he is not expected to be fined over the matter. Ferguson was expecting to be grilled about the issue at his media briefing on Monday afternoon to preview United’s Champions League home match against Braga on Tuesday night

Hleb: Guardiola is not the best coach, he had the best players

Posted on 1:14 PM by Unknown
BATE Borisov midfielder Aliaksandr Hleb has said he does not consider Pep Guardiola to be the greatest coach in the world, as he had the best players at his disposal during his time with Barcelona..

The Belarus international, who played all 90 minutes of his side's recent shock 3-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League group stage, spent four years with the Catalan giants between 2008-2012. "I learned more from Wenger than Guardiola, but Pep is a good coach," the 31-year-old told Esports en Xarxa.

"Guardiola is not the best coach in the world because he coached the best team in the world, with the best players, and that's why he won. "It's hard not to win with a team like that and [Tito] Vilanova will have the greatest success.

"The best coaches in the world are [Jose] Mourinho, [Sir Alex] Ferguson and [Arsene] Wenger. Hleb also spoke about his country's upcoming World Cup qualifying match with Spain on Friday. "I will strive to do my best.

Spain's team is almost unbeatable. They play brilliant football, like Barca," said the former Arsenal man. Speaking on his time with the Blaugrana, the well-travelled star added:

"I was very ambitious and wanted to play more but Barca played each player for a certain amount of minutes. "For me, that was not enough. I was angry and wanted more, which was why we had some conflicts with Guardiola, but now I understand it was the nonsense and tantrums of a little boy."

Albiol: Casillas is the best goalkeeper in the world

Posted on 1:12 PM by Unknown
Real Madrid centre-back Raul Albiol believes Iker Casillas is the best goalkeeper in the world and should be given the Ballon d'Or for his efforts for both club and country.

The former Valencia player spoke of his admiration for Spain's No.1 and believes a shot-stopper of his calibre deserves the accolade for being top of his game for so long. Casillas conceded twice in El Clasico but the defender insists there was little he could do about Lionel Messi's strikes while adding the 31-year-old has saved Los Blancos numerous times in the past..

"Casillas is the best goalkeeper in the world, he's the best player you could ask for in your team," Albiol said. "The other day, those two goals were really difficult for him. The first one was only a few metres away and the second was an incredible free-kick.

"He's the best in the world and he's saved us many times. I would put Casillas on the list of candidates for the Ballon d'Or. He's won the Liga and the European Championship this year and I think he was key for Real Madrid. "It's unusual for a goalkeeper to win it but for me he's on the list.

" Albiol was also supportive of fellow Spaniard Juan Mata, and believes the Chelsea star will be given a chance for Spain at some point in the future, despite difficult circumstances. He added: "The coach makes the call and it's tricky to get on the list. He's a very good player and I'm sure he'll have the opportunity to come back to the Spain team."

MOURINHO: Real Madrid are becoming the better team than Barcelona

Posted on 12:02 PM by Unknown
Barcelona's 2-2 draw at home to Real Madrid in the Camp Nou Clasico on Sunday sees the Catalans remain in control of the Primera Division as they retain their eight-point advantage on Jose Mourinho's men. Already, Barca look like winning La Liga..

But already, they appear to be losing their domestic dominance following the departure of Pep Guardiola. The tidy transition from Pep to Tito had seen the new man steer his side to six straight successes in La Liga, but the key tests come in the very biggest matches and having lost the Spanish Supercopa to Madrid over two legs in late August, Barca were unable to put their fiercest foes to the sword on Sunday, either.

Perhaps the tide is turning. Cristiano Ronaldo, once petrified of facing the Blaugrana, has now scored in his last five appearances at Camp Nou, also becoming the first player ever to register in six successive Clasico clashes.

He drove the opener past a static Victor Valdes and levelled the scores in the second half when put through by Mesut Ozil, just as it had looked like Lionel Messi would steal the show with a double of his own to move within one goal of Alfredo Di Stefano's all-time scoring record. Drew 2-2 Barcelona had chances to win it late on, but Madrid had given as good as they got in the first half and should have been two up as Karim Benzema hit the post when he really should have scored shortly after Ronaldo's opener.

Mourinho's men took the game to Tito's team and took advantage of some poor positioning from Barca's defence and midfield in the second goal. Vilanova has received much praise for his tactical nous but on occasions last night, his players were all over the place - except where they needed to be. Adriano impressed in central defence, but centre-back is stretching the Brazilian's 'utility man' tag too far and he cannot be considered a solution in that role.

With Gerard Pique and Carles Puyol sidelined, plus Eric Abidal out long-term and Dani Alves forced off injured, Vilanova reminded the press that he was denied his first-choice back line. But Puyol's problems are well known and Abidal has been out all year, so the argument hardly seemed convincing and had the club signed a centre-back in the summer, they surely would not be in this predicament now. In the end, it was problems in defence which blighted Barca's campaign in 2011-12 - when the Catalans captured four trophies but missed out on La Liga and the Champions League. Already there are concerns this term, although their problems have been masked by their near-perfect start in the Primera Division. In spite of their start, though, something has changed over the last nine months. In January of this year, Mourinho watched his side lose their third straight Clasico clash.

He had tried everything and, Copa del Rey win aside, he had failed. A 5-0 drubbing in his very first Clasico and just one win (in extra time) from his first nine, including five losses, made miserable reading for Real fans and reports of the coach's departure quickly surfaced. Barcelona were well on top and it seemed as if things would stay that way.

But since then, Mourinho has won two, draw two and lost just one in the Clasico, with the last five clashes highlighting a much more motivated Madrid, while Barca seem somewhat subdued since the beginning of the year and appear to have lost part of their passion and hunger since the departure of Guardiola. Perhaps Pep got away at the right time, unable to motivate the players as he had done in his first three seasons and worn down under the pressure of Mourinho's mind games.

Tito brings new blood and fresh energy, but lacks the presence of his predecessor. And although results have been good, performance levels have dropped. Of the three Clasicos he has disputed as coach, only the first was entirely satisfactory, although even that ended in disappointment with Victor Valdes' error handing Madrid a lifeline. In the Supercopa's second leg at the Bernabeu, the Catalans were picked apart and should have been punished more severely than the 2-1 loss suggested, while Sunday's showing wasn't entirely convincing, either, despite dominance late on.

So while winning La Liga still looks likely for Tito's team, Barca are slowly but surely losing their grip on the game in Spain. As the Catalans' performances wane under Vilanova, it is now Mourinho's Madrid who are becoming the better side.

When it comes to individual awards, it is attacking players who often hog the limelight. This can be perfectly illustrated by the list of past Ballon d'Or winners - only three defenders and one goalkeeper have picked up the prize..

But defenders and goalkeepers are just as important as the more heralded midfielders and attackers, as Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart proved this week.

The England No.1 put on a shot-stopping clinic against Dortmund at Eastlands, producing a string of miraculous, world-class saves from the likes of Mario Gotze. That City managed to grab a completely undeserved point with a late Mario Balotelli penalty - thus keeping their qualification hopes alive - was purely down to Hart.

The 25-year-old followed up this perfect five-star masterclass with another commanding showing in the 3-0 Premier League win over Sunderland on Saturday

Ronaldo given green light for Portugal

Posted on 11:54 AM by Unknown
Cristiano Ronaldo has been given the green light by Real Madrid to join up with the Portugal squad to prepare for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers after tests showed the shoulder injury picked up during Sunday night's 2-2 draw at Barcelona was not serious..

Ronaldo fell awkwardly on his shoulder after attempting a bicycle kick midway through the second half with the score at 2-1 to Barcelona.

He was loudly jeered by home fans inside the stadium, but picked himself up to fire in the equaliser just moments later for his second goal of the game. Despite being noticeably troubled by the knock, the former Manchester United attacker completed the 90 minutes and travelled back to the Spanish capital with the Real squad on Sunday night.

After being examined on Monday morning at his Madrid home, Ronaldo was given the all-clear to join up with his national squad. "Cristiano Ronaldo will today join the rest of the Portugal squad," a Real Madrid statement on Monday lunchtime said.

"The Real Madrid forward, who suffered a sprained left shoulder during the match against Barcelona, was examined at his home this morning by Real Madrid doctors, who have said that his injury is not serious and that he does not need to undergo more tests in a hospital.

"Real Madrid have already informed the Portuguese Football Federation that Cristiano Ronaldo will join their national team squad today in Obidos. Once there, the Whites' player will be kept under observation and will have no problem in playing on Friday in Moscow for Portugal against Russia in the World Cup 2014 qualifier." Euro 2012 semi-finalists Portugal also host Northern Ireland in Oporto next Tuesday in their bid to qualify for Brazil 2014.

Ancelotti: I was not impressed by Ibrahimovic against OM

Posted on 11:52 AM by Unknown
Paris Saint-Germain coach Carlo Ancelotti has stressed that he was not impressed by Zlatan Ibrahimovic's performance in Sunday's 2-2 Ligue 1 draw against Olympique de Marseille..

The Sweden international netted twice to help the Parisiens to a draw at the Stade Velodrome, but the former Chelsea boss was not surprised by the striker's display as he knows of what the player is capable.

"I was not impressed by his performance, because I know Zlatan very well. He's a great goalscorer and a very complete player," Ancelotti was quoted as saying by RMC.

"Zlatan was excellent from set-pieces but there were also chances for [Javier] Pastore and [Kevin] Gameiro. "Ibra is used well in our side. He's scoring and that's good for us. People say he's tired? Maybe. I think that at even 80 per cent he is good enough to play.

"He has a lot of qualities and has a nice character as well. He's very useful for the team." Ibrahimovic has netted nine goals in seven Ligue 1 appearances so far.

Chelsea star Mata confident of Spain recall

Posted on 11:52 AM by Unknown
Chelsea star Juan Mata insists he remains confident of a recall to the national set-up with Spain.

In spite of his impressive start to the season with the Blues, the 24-year-old was a surprise omission from La Roja’s squad to face Belarus and France in the latest round of World Cup qualifiers..

“I have to go forward and trust in the call,” he told AS. “I always try to give my best in every practice and every game, to be at the highest level. I think that's what led me to be at an important club like Chelsea and enjoying top level football.

“Therefore, that's what I'm going to keep doing, not taking anything for granted and working and training as usual.” Mata capped a successful first season with Chelsea by scoring the final goal in Spain's 4-0 rout of Italy in the Euro 2012 final, despite only coming on as a substitute in the dying moments.

After an extended break from pre-season training following his participation in the London 2012 Olympic football tournament, he has hit the ground running for the Blues, contributing four goals and five assists in his last five matches.

Shelvey, Bertrand get England calls

Posted on 11:31 AM by Unknown
Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and Chelsea full-back Ryan Bertrand have been added to the England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers..

Shelvey has been promoted to Roy Hodgson's senior set-up from the Under-21 squad due to injury concerns over Frank Lampard.

The 20-year-old, who is suspended for Stuart Pearce's team for the first leg of their European Championship play-off with Serbia, has been brought in to cover for veteran Chelsea midfielder Lampard, who picked up a knee injury during the Blues' 4-1 win over Norwich at the weekend. Shelvey will be in the squad for Friday's World Cup qualifier against San Marino at Wembley.

However the Romford-born midfielder, who is uncapped at senior level, is expected to re-join the Under-21s for the second leg before the seniors travel to face Poland in Group H the following Tuesday.

Chelsea left-back Bertrand has also been called up after Kieran Gibbs was forced to withdraw due to injury. Arsenal left-back Gibbs picked up a knock during the Gunners' Premier League victory over West Ham United on Saturday evening. Bertrand, who has two full England caps following substitute appearances against Italy and Ukraine this season, could be in line for his first senior start depending on the outcome of the FA's disciplinary action against his club-mate Ashley Cole.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was pessimistic about Gibbs' chances of playing for England after limping off just before the hour-mark against the Hammers, and his exclusion was subsequently confirmed by medical staff. "He has a thigh problem just above his knee; I think he will be very doubtful for England," Wenger had said on Saturday.

Arsene Wenger expects Walcott to stay

Posted on 11:31 AM by Unknown
Arsene Wenger remains confident Theo Walcott will sign a new contract at Arsenal..

Walcott, whose current deal expires in the summer, will be eligible to open talks over a pre-contract agreement with another club in January. However, Arsenal are still eager to tie Walcott down to a new deal and it is expected that Wenger will use the international break to advance talks with club officials.

"I think Theo will stay," Wenger said. "We are always in touch (with his advisors), so we will see what happens. Theo keeps focused and he wants to show he is 100% professional and I have a big respect for that attitude.

" Walcott has indicated that his decision will be based on whether he is able to play in a central role, and he made an impact when coming on as a substitute during the 3-1 victory over West Ham at the weekend. "Theo has finished his finishing and while his game is based on movement off the ball, he can score in the middle. I have always said this. He can play wide, he can play centre. If he plays wide or centre, he gets in positions where he can score."

Rooney not worried by goal drought

Posted on 11:31 AM by Unknown
Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has insisted he is not worried by his goal drought as his wait for his first strike of the season goes on.

Rooney scored 35 goals for his club last year, but he is yet to open his account in a stop-start campaign in which he has made six appearances despite spending a month on the sidelines with a gashed thigh..

Thirteen United players have now got off the mark for the season, but while Rooney - the fourth-highest scorer in United's history - is not one of them, he says the team is the most important thing. "As long as we keep winning, I'm not concerned. If it comes, it comes.

We've got other players who can score goals for us," Rooney said. He played at the tip of a midfield diamond in Sunday's 3-0 win over Newcastle, a role he also occupied in the Capital One Cup victory against the Magpies and the Champions League clash with Cluj, and the 26-year-old is happy with his new position.

He added: "I was involved in the whole game. I'm not one who won't put the work in and I will do my best for the team. That's all I can do." Rooney felt the clean sheet was one of the most important element of United's win at Newcastle.

He said: "We didn't defend well enough in the first few league games - not just the back four but the whole team. But we were brilliant. They are a really big team, a physical team, so we knew we had to defend our box really well. We managed to do that.

There was a focus about us today and we need to do that for the rest of the season if we're going to be successful. "It was a great result for us. Everyone knows it's one of the hardest games of the season Newcastle away but we came here and defended brilliantly, scored three goals and, overall, fully deserved the victory."

Di Matteo fears Hazard 'diver' tag

Posted on 11:30 AM by Unknown
Roberto Di Matteo has claimed that Eden Hazard does not get awarded perfectly legitimate penalties because he has an unfair reputation for diving.

The Chelsea manager's words come after his side's 4-1 victory over Norwich in, which the Belgian attacker had two penalty calls turned away by referee Andrew Taylor..

They also echo the comments of Brendan Rodgers over Liverpool's Luis Suarez, as the debate about diving only escalates. "The first three penalties he got in the first few games were clear-cut penalties," Di Matteo said.

"But there were a few others where he didn't get them so I wouldn't want the officials to have a prejudice against him. "If it's a foul, it's a foul. Sometimes they get them right, sometimes wrong. I wouldn't accuse my players of going down too easily. "It's a different culture. In England you need to try everything to try to stay on your feet."
