Sunderland released Gordon, who they paid £9 million to sign from Hearts in 2007, in the summer and he has so far been unable to find a club after five injury-ravaged years on Wearside.
Gordon can still sign for any club with a space in their 25-man squad as he is a free agent, and Saints only named 23 players when they submitted their list to the Premier League last week.
Long-standing Saints No. 1 Kelvin Davis has come under fire after conceding 14 goals in his side's first four Premier League games, but a rapid demotion for the club captain would be harsh after he played such an important role in their back-to-back promotions successes that secured a return to the top flight.
However, with pressure mounting on Saints boss Nigel Adkins, he may feel the need to make a change ahead of Saturday's crucial home game against Aston Villa, which many observers are already putting into the 'must win' category for the manager and his beleaguered team which has yet to secure a point.
